Britt’s Garage - A Mural for the Shore

I was excited when my friend Brittany approached me about hand-painting a mural on her free-standing garage in Brigantine, NJ. She wanted something that showcased being down the shore with a central focus on surfing.

While doing the site visit I quickly realized that the corrugated metal ends and different elevations running along the length of the six-car garage would be a complicated but fun undertaking. Considering the surface's textures and multiple facets, I recommended a bold, bright design for this mural. This would allow the surface to work as a design element rather than a combative factor fighting the vantage point of the creative.

Three surfers, cresting rolling waves wrap the corner of the building darting in between doorways, around light fixtures, and under the roof. A sun is nestled into the roof's apex on the street-facing facade. Its multi-colored rays run behind the waves and around the corner of the building. The mural colors chosen for the water are pulled from the Atlantic Ocean, a reflection of the shoreline a block away from the wall.

The mural took about six days to complete. Starting with spraying the primer we moved on to pouncing the same day. My wife Nicole helped with this two-person process. During painting Brittany and her mom, Linda, stopped by on separate occasions to help cut some of the lines and fill in sections. Brittany’s pitbull, Foles also made an appearance, putting the dog in Walldog.

Dodging some springtime showers during the production, we finally wrapped on a nice sunny day. This mural showcases the impact of large colorful shapes rolling and dipping in and out of a unique wallscape. The chance to be a part of this hand-painted mural at the Jersey Shore was an absolute pleasure!
